Osteopathy & Muscular Therapy
Whether or not you sign up for a massage or come to me for an osteopathic treatment I still look at you from the same perspective. A person who wants to feel better. Here is a description of how I work with you.
I design a session that is a personalized health and balance treatment based on traditional osteopathic philosophies and techniques. I embrace the osteopathic philosophy that the body has a natural ability to self-regulate and heal itself. To empower this ability, the body must have an unrestricted circulation of fluids including the blood, lymph, and digestive juices. The focus of my therapy is the identification and treatment of physical and/or emotional obstructions that impede the circulation of fluids.
Obstructions often result in symptoms distant from the cause. For this reason, a biodynamic assessment is conducted on the body as a whole.  This approach allows the identification of root issues, rather than the treatment of symptoms. Treatment is directed towards a specific area, often removed from the symptom, to assist the body to regain its individual and optimal ability to circulate fluids. This alignment and restoration of circulation promotes the body's natural ability to self-regulate and heal with effects often felt throughout the entire body.
Physical obstructions can include twists or pulls as well as misaligned bones, organs or tissues. Emotional impediments may include conscious or unconscious responses developed to maintain a defensive position, such as a tendency to hold the breath. These are often responses to stressful incidents of the past or present, or are of a repetitive nature in certain situations such as raising the shoulders in times of stress.
Over time the body gradually loses its ability to efficiently self-regulate.  This loss may be due to the aging process, physical conditions caused by accident, illness, or repetitive activity such as in the workplace, and the cumulative effects of emotional or spiritual stress. In most cases, some combination of conditions has contributed to an imbalance and the experience of symptoms.

What problems can this treatment help?

A partial list of conditions that manual osteopathy can address includes:

  • Back, neck or shoulder pain
  • Hip, knee and foot pain
  • Headaches: muscle tension or associated with migraine
  • Athletic or overuse strain injuries
  • Sciatica
  • TMJ syndrome
  • Sinus problems
  • Seasonal allergies
  • Intestinal disorders

What is an initial consultation & treatment? The initial assessment process begins with a consultation, analysis and treatment lasting 60-75 minutes. The client is advised to wear shorts and a sports bra (for women).
The initial visit consists of:

  • Health history interview
  • Postural exam and analysis
  • Hands-on assessment of the position, mobility and quality of tissues, fluids, and rhythms of the body
  • Treatment
  • Follow-up treatment plan

A personalized treatment plan consists of a variety of techniques to restore and maintain natural body balance.  Treatment methods include:

  • Osteopathic Cranial Sacral therapy
  • Myofascial release
  • Soft tissue mobilization
  • Visceral manipulation
  • Joint mobilization
  • Muscle energy technique

What is a typical treatment?
Following the initial consultation, a typical treatment session will vary between 40-50 minutes.  The objective of each session is to evaluate the current condition, identify changes and apply the appropriate treatment to restore and maintain natural circulation. Treatment sessions are scheduled for continuing improvement, maintenance or on an “as needed” basis.
